Investment Banking – Few good analysts are born, most are made!

The first year in IB is often considered the toughest for anyone. A first-year analyst typically faces:

  1. Tons of emails

  2. Some really hard-to-decode comments

  3. Dealing with seniors who may have forgotten what it's like not to know finance concepts well

  4. Punching numbers in pre-created templates without understanding the context

  5. Barely having time to grasp the bigger picture due to constant workstreams with tight deadlines

The role of a Senior/Associate/VP/Mentor becomes critical in navigating these challenges. The best mentors invest in training and developing first-year analysts, often leading them to become some of the strongest in the group.

All you need for this job is moderate levels of IQ, EQ, and a good attitude/work ethic. Micro-managing seniors can hinder performance by creating a negative feedback loop.

If you're struggling, continue to give your best effort until you surprise everyone with stellar performance.

Trust that this will happen!
